Northumberland County is changing the way Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) operate.
Starting July 2, 2025, residents and businesses must show proof of a Northumberland County address before dropping off materials. Officials say the move will help protect the long-term use of the County’s only active landfill, located in Brighton.
“We appreciate the cooperation of residents, businesses and contractors as we make this important change,” said Adam McCue, Associate Director of Operations for Public Works. “We understand this may be an adjustment, but it is a necessary step to protect our landfill and maintain an effective, reliable waste management system for our community.”
Visitors to a CRC will need to present proof of a local residence or business address. Accepted documents include a driver’s licence, utility bill, tax bill, lease agreement, or an original signed business letter with a County address.
Contractors can show a signed contract, work order, or invoice tied to a Northumberland property.
The change is part of the County’s broader effort to manage landfill use responsibly and preserve waste services for local needs.
