Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services were quick to act Wednesday night after a transformer exploded and caused fire to spread to several vehicles parked below at the Esco property on Hope Street South.
“Last night, shortly after 10 p.m., Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to multiple 911 calls in relation to a reported explosion,” Jason Williams, director of protective services and fire chief for the municipality, told MBC. “Upon arrival, fire suppression staff discovered a 44,000-volt transformer at the incident location had exploded and subsequently caused fire to spread to several vehicles parked below.”
Crews quickly tackled offensive fire suppression efforts and were able to extinguish the blaze without incident, said Williams.
“The failure of the transformer caused a power outage in a large area of the municipality …”
Williams said Elexicon Energy was also contacted and responded to the location, and repairs are being undertaken, as well as a damage assessment at this time.
There were no reported injuries associated with the event.
