An Alberta resident is facing a slew of charges after OPP say a traffic stop in Belleville and a raid in Quinte West led to the alleged seizure of more than $100,000 worth of drugs.
According to OPP, its East Region community street crime unit and the Belleville Police Service project renewal team started an investigation back in April into drug-trafficking in the Quinte area.
On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, OPP issued a release, saying the day prior – Monday, May 12 – the community street crime unit, with help from OPP’s organized crime enforcement bureau, emergency response team and canine unit, conducted a traffic stop on Hwy. 2 in Belleville.
“One person was arrested without incident and a loaded handgun with an over-capacity magazine was seized,” reported OPP.
Officers also searched the pick-up truck and allegedly located nearly 400 grams of suspected fentanyl, nearly 29 grams of suspected heroin, more than 230 grams of suspected cocaine, more than two dozen hydromorphone pills, nearly two dozen hydrochloride pills, as well as more than $5,000 in cash, items typically associated with drug-trafficking and ammunition for the seized handgun, said police.
“The estimated street value of the seized drugs is well over $100,000,” added police.
Investigators said they then executed a search warrant at an apartment on Creswell Drive in Trenton, where additional ammunition and other items were found.
As a result of the investigation, police said Charles Carlos, 26, of Calgary, Alta., was charged with:
- Five counts of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking.
- Carrying a concealed weapon.
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
- Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.
- Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm.
- Careless use of a firearm.
- Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition.
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm.
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm.
- Occupant of a vehicle knowing there was a prohibited or restricted weapon.
- Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
None of these charges have been proven in court. Police said the accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Tuesday.
Police said an investigation is also continuing into an apparent breach of conditions related to firearm possession.
