Canada Post workers in Port Hope on picket line, November 15, 2024
With a Canada Post labour disruption possible by Friday, Northumberland County is advising residents that mail services may be delayed or suspended, potentially affecting bills, notices, and service documents.
The County says a strike notice was issued on May 19, with job action expected to begin May 23 if no agreement is reached. In the event of a strike, large mailings such as invoices or notices won’t be sent, and incoming mail could be delayed.
Residents who recently received a bill are still responsible for on-time payment. The County encourages online services at Northumberland.ca/OnlineServices.
Ontario Works (OW) clients who normally receive their payments by mail must pick up their cheques at the Community & Social Services office at 555 Courthouse Road, Cobourg. Direct deposit and reloadable payment card users will not be affected. Identification is required for pick-up.
Other services affected include child care subsidy, housing, and rent supplement programs. Documents can be submitted in person or online. Waste bag tag purchases have been suspended online but are still available at retail locations listed at Northumberland.ca/BagTags.
Fines under the Provincial Offences Act can still be paid online, by phone, or in person at 860 William Street in Cobourg.
If the disruption continues beyond the June OW payment date, further instructions will be issued.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through the County’s website and contact staff with any concerns.
