Seven families have officially moved into their new homes in the Village of Baltimore, thanks to Habitat for Humanity Northumberland’s largest and most ambitious project to date.
On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Habitat staff, board members, volunteers, local leaders, and supporters gathered in the rain to celebrate the completion of a seven-unit townhouse project – the first Net-Zero build for Habitat Northumberland and the largest Net-Zero development in Habitat Canada’s history.
Habitat CEO Cathy Borowec says the homes will positively impact 24 people and represent a major step forward in affordable, energy-efficient housing.
Habitat Northumberland acquired the vacant lot in 2021 and broke ground in May 2023. The project received a $350,000 investment from the Government of Canada through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy.
“This has been a dream project,” said Borowec. “It’s the first time we’ve been able to house seven families all at once. In total, 24 lives are being positively impacted.”
Borowec added that rising building material costs made the project more challenging. A capital campaign, chaired by the Pennington-Campbell family, helped raise funds to cover the costs of energy-efficient materials and equipment.
The new homeowners – Amber and Jordan, Cassie and Nathan, Corrine and Brandon, Hailey, Jenna, Melissa and Matt, and Nic and Kristin – contributed over 3,500 volunteer hours between the Habitat ReStore and construction site.
The new owners say they’ve already gotten to know their new neighbours.
The new families recieved the keys to the homes they helped build, volunteering thousands of hours at Habitat’s ReStore and construction sites.
Since 2019, the federal government has invested $65.1 million to support Habitat for Humanity Canada in building over 800 homes nationwide.
