A pedestrian has died after being struck by a train near the rail crossing at Burnham Street and Westwood Drive in Cobourg on Friday afternoon.
Cobourg police say emergency crews were called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. following a report of a person being hit by a train. Officers, firefighters, and paramedics responded and found the individual with serious injuries. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say there is no risk to public safety at this time. The investigation is ongoing in partnership with the Office of the Chief Coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Members of the Cobourg Police Service remained on scene throughout the afternoon, and the rail crossing will stay closed until further notice. Police are asking the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
