A terrifying moment during a tennis match turned into an inspiring story of community preparedness and life-saving teamwork.
Joe Palumbo collapsed from cardiac arrest during the first tournament of the 2025 season at Coverdale Tennis Club. Quick action from fellow club members Lisa McBride, Raisa Goboleo, and Shelley Richards, who called 9-1-1 and began CPR, set the Chain of Survival in motion. Joe credits his recovery to the professionalism of everyone involved, saying, “I am so happy to be here to give thanks-and the grateful happiness of my family-to all the professionals to whom I owe my survival.”
In recognition, Northumberland Paramedics presented the club with a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) through their Public Access Defibrillator Program. The donation was funded through internal fundraising, including dress-down days and raffles. Chief Susan Brown said it was more than a gift, it was a symbol of community strength. “When bystanders, first responders, and healthcare teams work together, lives are saved.”
Alongside the donation, paramedics trained club members and honoured the three rescuers with certificates. The club also gave back, donating $1,000 to help place AEDs in more community locations.
“This gives us confidence going forward,” said Club Vice President Randy Heaton. “We’re grateful and reassured.”
