Paving and repair scams are back on the rise across the province, and OPP is urging residents to practise vigilance.
In these scams, individuals may offer to pave driveways, fix roofs or tackle other home repairs, often claiming it’s a “one-day-only deal.”
“They may seem professional with flyers and websites, but they often use fake names, false ID and unmarked vehicles,” said police.
“They ask for cash up-front, then leave behind poor-quality work or never return at all,” warned police.
Typically, these scams occur between April and October, and more concerning, often go unreported.
“If someone shows up at your door offering services you didn’t request, don’t feel pressured. Take your time, talk to a trusted friend or family member and report anything suspicious to police.”
Police continue to urge residents to keep in mind the old saying: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
To avoid fraudsters, police also note residents should keep in mind some other simple tips, such as the fact that proper businesses don’t need to knock on doors – they’re usually already busy. People should always check out a company first and read whole contracts – and if you think it might be a scam, call local police.
Anyone targeted by such scams should contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
