Quinte West OPP and Belleville police say they continue to focus on the “big four” this month, and enforcement efforts are yielding results.
As part of the enforcement effort, the two services are conducting focused patrols along Old Hwy. 2 between RCAF Road and Tyendinaga.
Focused patrols help analyze data to determine crime and traffic trends within municipalities, said Quinte West OPP. With the information gathered, police are better able to determine where and when resources should be deployed, added police.
In this instance, police data analysis shows that weekdays during the commuter hours speeds are high, and people’s attention appears to be distracted, reported OPP.
As a result of this initiative, throughout July between these hours, people may see an increased police presence along this stretch of road.
The goal of the joint effort is ultimately to reduce collisions and improve road safety by tackling factors in serious and fatal crashes – such factors as aggressive driving and speeding, distracted and impaired driving, and not wearing seat belts, explained police.
According to the latest rundown from police, since July 3, officers with both services have issued a combined total of 123 provincial offences notices, including: 95 notices for speeding; seven seat belt fines; two notices for equipment defects; four commercial motor vehicle fines; eight notices related to drivers not having valid documentation; one fine for driving with cannabis readily available, two notices for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle, and four other moving violations.
