
The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to several significant incidents over the weekend, resulting in multiple charges and safety reminders across the county.
On September 6 at about 9:15 a.m., officers were called to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 401 eastbound in Alnwick/Haldimand. The vehicle was on its side off the roadway and both occupants were transported to hospital with minor injuries. Police say methamphetamine and cannabis were seized. A 44-year-old man from Quebec is charged with possession of a Schedule I substance, failing to comply with a probation order, careless driving, driving without a licence and having cannabis readily available. He is due in Cobourg court in October.
On September 5, police were called to a business on Canrobert Street in Trent Hills where two people were observed taking items without paying. Two Centre Hastings residents, ages 48 and 50, face theft under $5,000 charges and will appear in Cobourg court in October.
Later on September 6, emergency crews responded to an ATV crash off County Road 27 in Brighton. The rider suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air ORNGE to a Toronto hospital. The investigation continues.
And on September 7, a 56-year-old driver from Port Hope was charged with stunt driving after being clocked at 184 km/h in an 80 zone on Oak Ridges Drive in Hamilton Township. Their licence was suspended for 14 days and the vehicle impounded for 30 days.
Police urge drivers and off-road vehicle users to follow safety laws and report suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers.
