A Quebec resident is facing charges after Quinte West OPP says they intercepted a stolen vehicle being tracked by GPS on Hwy. 401.
The alleged incident happened on Oct. 25 at about 8 a.m. when police said they were alerted to a stolen vehicle moving through the area and being tracked by an installed GPS.
The vehicle was intercepted on Hwy. 401, and one occupant was arrested, reported OPP, adding the stolen vehicle has also been returned to its rightful owner.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 44-year-old Quebec resident was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a device for the purpose of committing theft, possession of a schedule I substance – cocaine, mischief under $5,000, and failure to comply with a probation order.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The incident has police once again pushing a reminder to citizens that “thieves are constantly developing new methods to facilitate vehicle thefts.”
Proactive measures like installing a GPS tracking device can help prevent thefts, as well as parking vehicles in locked garages – as most vehicles are reported stolen from driveways.
OPP also recommends using a steering wheel lock, which also serves as a visual deterrent and installing a lock on your car’s data port. These are simple devices that can be purchased online and block access to vehicles’ computer ports, added police.
