Northumberland OPP has laid charges against a 28-year-old male inmate at Warkworth Institution following a November 24, 2025, seizure of contraband.
Correctional officers say they discovered cannabis, tobacco, and cell phones in a cell area, leading to a police investigation and the issuance of a warrant.
The inmate faces two charges: possession of contraband beyond the visitor control point in a penitentiary and possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution. He was held to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
Police say the investigation highlights the ongoing partnership between the OPP and Correctional Service Canada, which focuses on preventing the introduction of contraband, maintaining institutional security, and protecting staff, inmates, and the surrounding public. Both agencies stress that proactive measures, strict enforcement, and thorough investigations are key to ensuring safety in correctional facilities.
