Residents gathered on the Ontario Street bridge in Cobourg today to pay their respects during the repatriation of a fallen member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, standing in quiet solidarity as the procession passed along the Highway of Heroes.
People lined the bridge, many holding flags, offering visible support to the soldier’s family and reflecting on the cost of military service. For some in attendance, the loss was deeply personal.
“Sebastian went to Latvia and my son was transferred to Alberta. So I’m here on behalf of my son and our family,” said one woman, noting her son served alongside the fallen soldier. “It’s heartbreaking and we all have to stick together and show our support.”
Others said they came to ensure the family understood how widely their loss is felt.
“He’s got the whole country behind him. We feel his loss,” another resident said as the procession moved beneath the bridge.
A third attendee echoed that message, emphasizing how easily tragedy can touch military families.
Members of the Royal Canadian Legion were also present, underscoring the importance of public participation during repatriation ceremonies.
Cobourg Legion President Janet Kyle said the turnout reflected a deep respect for those who serve.
As the procession continued through the region, those gathered on the Ontario Street bridge remained in place, offering a final moment of remembrance.
Officials say the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death is ongoing.
