Police in Quinte West are continuing to promote a crime prevention initiative aimed at reducing thefts from vehicles and properties.
Ontario Provincial Police say they continue to receive reports of thefts, even during colder winter months. Many of these incidents involve unlocked vehicles, garages, or sheds, as well as valuables left in plain view. Police note that these situations often lead to crimes of opportunity that could be avoided with basic precautions.
Through the “Lock It or Lose It” program, OPP are reminding residents to consistently lock vehicles, homes, sheds, and garages, even when stepping away briefly. Police also encourage residents to remove wallets, purses, electronics, tools, and other valuables, or store them out of sight to reduce temptation.
Officers stress the importance of securing windows and ensuring doors are properly locked before leaving a vehicle or property. Residents are also reminded never to leave keys, key fobs, or garage door openers inside vehicles.
Police say following these steps significantly lowers the risk of theft and helps deter criminal activity in neighbourhoods across Quinte West.
The OPP continue to encourage residents to remain alert, report suspicious activity, and take preventative measures to protect their property. Police say a small amount of effort can go a long way in keeping communities safe.
