Lakelands Public Health is reminding parents and guardians of students in Grades 2 and 11 to ensure immunization records are up to date or that an approved exemption is on file.
Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, families are responsible for reporting vaccinations directly to their local health unit. Public health officials say the information is not automatically shared by doctors or other health care providers.
Students whose records remain incomplete could face suspension beginning March 31.
Before that happens, suspension notices will be distributed through schools on March 9 and sent home with students. Officials say the advance notice is intended to give families time to correct or confirm information and avoid disruption to learning.
Parents and guardians can review or update records using Immunization Connect Ontario or through Lakelands Public Health’s online portal. For students who do not have access to a primary care provider, public health offers immunization clinics by appointment.
Families seeking an exemption can also begin that process online. Submissions are reviewed by nursing staff, who may follow up if additional details are required.
The campaign is supported by several area school boards, including Kawartha Pine Ridge, Trillium Lakelands, MonAvenir and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic board.
Parents who need help are encouraged to contact Lakelands Public Health directly at 1 866 888 4577.
