Northumberland County council has approved demolition of the existing Golden Plough Lodge following the relocation of residents to the new long-term care facility.
The decision comes after staff presented a detailed review of the costs and risks associated with maintaining the aging building as a vacant structure.
The county estimates those ongoing costs at approximately $667,745 annually, including security, utilities and mechanical maintenance.
A recent site tour also highlighted significant structural and system concerns, including asbestos, outdated mechanical systems and deteriorating building components.
Councillor Scott Jibb said those realities made the decision clear.
Staff estimates suggest repurposing the facility could cost anywhere from $7.5 million to $55 million depending on the scope of work required.
Council ultimately supported demolition as part of the original redevelopment plan.
That estimate includes demolition, internal road work and landscaping tied to the new Golden Plough Lodge development.
The motion to proceed with demolition was carried by council.
