Lakelands Public Health is encouraging residents to focus on the power of social connection during Mental Health Week, running May 4th to 10th.
This year’s theme highlights the important role connection plays in supporting both mental and physical well-being, helping reduce stress, improve mood, and create a stronger sense of belonging.
To support the campaign, Lakelands Public Health is launching Connection Corner Displays in partnership with 18 public library branches across Northumberland County, the City of Kawartha Lakes, and Haliburton County.
The interactive displays will help residents explore the benefits of social connection, discover local programs and supports, and offer a chance to win a connection-themed prize.
Health promoter Joanne Brewster says even small moments, like having a conversation, taking part in a shared activity, or simply spending time in a welcoming community space, can make a meaningful difference.
She says libraries are natural gathering places where people can learn, connect, and feel a sense of belonging.
Public health officials say having good mental health does not mean life is free from challenges, but strong and supportive relationships can help people feel more resilient during difficult times.
They say prioritizing connection is an investment in health now and in the future.
Residents are encouraged to visit a participating library branch during Mental Health Week to check out the displays and local resources.
