A procession to escort Northumberland OPP Sgt. Brandon Malcolm from the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto to Oshawa is taking place today (Thursday, April 30.)
As previously reported, Malcolm served with Northumberland OPP since 2020. After reports of a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on eastbound Hwy. 401 near Burnham Street in Cobourg Monday evening, OPP confirmed Malcolm died in the line of duty and was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.
The procession will depart from the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto at about 1 p.m. and travel eastbound on Hwy. 401 to an Oshawa funeral home.
However, for the safety of those involved in the procession, police are respectfully asking only OPP-approved vehicles and designated members participate in the procession.
“Members of the public who wish to show their support may join first-responders in showing their respect from one of the many overpasses along Hwy. 401 between Keele Street and Thickson Road South,” stated OPP. “To help ensure everyone’s safety, please avoid obstructing traffic or stopping on the highway to exit your vehicle.”
OPP said police will also livestream the procession on YouTube @ontarioprovincialpolice.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to first-responders and community members for the compassion and support you have demonstrated to the OPP during this difficult time,” added OPP.
Residents looking to pay their respects can also sign a book of condolences established in memory of Malcolm at opp.ca/news.
Locally, a book of condolences has also been set up at the Brighton OPP Detachment and in Cobourg, a memorial motorcycle was set up yesterday, and residents have also been leaving flowers there.
“Funeral arrangements are still in the early stages. More information will be released as it becomes available.”
OPP also said police are working closely with Malcolm’s loved ones to ensure their wishes are respected during this extremely difficult time.
