Families across Northumberland preparing children with disabilities or exceptionalities for school this fall will have a chance to connect with support services, educators and other parents through an upcoming Ready for School event in Cobourg.
Hosted by Five Counties Children’s Centre, the free event takes place Saturday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at the organization’s Cobourg location at 800 Division Street.
Five Counties has supported children and youth with physical, developmental and communication needs across the region for decades, providing treatment, rehabilitation and family support services aimed at helping children reach their full potential.
Event organizer Hayley Hodges says the goal of Ready for School is to help children from junior kindergarten to Grade 3 transition more smoothly into the classroom while giving families practical information and reassurance.
The event includes a parent panel, opportunities to speak with clinicians and educators, information about classroom supports and resources, and interactive play stations supervised by registered early childhood educators.
Hodges says one of the biggest benefits is helping families realize they are not alone during the transition process.
Families attending will also be able to tour a school bus, ask questions about classroom supports and receive welcome packages with tools and resources to help prepare children for the transition.
Organizers encourage Northumberland families to pre-register online through the Five Counties Children’s Centre website.
