Northumberland County says a planned prescribed burn in the county forest has been postponed due to unfavourable environmental conditions this spring.
In a public notice issued, the county said several factors contributed to the decision, including limited drying time between rainfall, consistently cold nighttime temperatures and rapid seasonal green up across the forest.
Officials said those conditions do not support the safe or effective implementation of the controlled burn.
The prescribed burn had been planned as part of ongoing forest management and habitat restoration efforts within the county forest system.
Northumberland County added that prescribed burns are an important land management tool used to help maintain forest health and restore unique ecosystems.
The county now plans to reassess site and weather conditions later this year and hopes to proceed with the burn in the fall if conditions improve.
Prescribed burns are commonly used to reduce invasive growth, encourage native species regeneration and improve habitat conditions for plants and wildlife.
County officials noted additional updates will be shared with the public as plans progress.
