Residents in parts of Northumberland County and neighbouring eastern Ontario communities are being advised about upcoming military training exercises involving the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command.
According to the Canadian Armed Forces, the training will take place from May 26 through June 26 across areas including Campbellford, Peterborough, Belleville, Picton, Bloomfield, Quinte West, Tweed and Stirling.
Military officials say residents may notice increased military vehicle and aircraft activity during the month long exercise.
The public may also encounter both uniformed and non uniformed military personnel carrying firearms as part of the training operations.
Officials warn residents could hear noises associated with explosives and small arms fire during portions of the exercise. However, the Canadian Armed Forces stresses only simulated and blank ammunition and explosives will be used.
The military says the training is designed to provide Canadian Special Operations Forces personnel with realistic and challenging scenarios in unfamiliar environments.
In a statement, National Defence thanked local residents and communities for their continued support in allowing military personnel to conduct exercises throughout the region.
The Canadian Armed Forces says the training helps prepare personnel to respond to operations in support of Canada’s national interests wherever they may be deployed.
The exercises are expected to continue through June 26.
