From marine rescues to crashes and impaired driving investigations, it’s been another busy couple of days for Northumberland OPP.
Here’s your latest local rundown:
CRASHES:
On Saturday, May 23, at about 3:15 p.m., emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer that had hit the centre median on Hwy. 401 westbound in the Township of Hamilton.
The collision shut down two lanes for the on-site investigation and “heavy vehicle recovery” but no serious injuries were reported, said police, adding the scene was also cleared before 6 p.m.
However, the investigation is still ongoing, and updates will be provided when more information is available, said OPP.
Also last Thursday, shortly before 6:30 p.m., officers said they responded to a collision at the Dundas and Prince Edward streets intersection in Brighton.
When they arrived on scene, a passenger vehicle was found partially blocking traffic after colliding with a pick-up truck, reported OPP.
No serious injuries were reported, but the probe has led to the driver of the pick-up truck – a 69-year-old Colborne man – charged with careless driving, said police.
MARINE INCIDENTS:
On Saturday, May 23, at about 4 p.m., police and fire responded to a report of a boater in distress drifting on Rice Lake.
Fire crews were able to help the individual to shore and paramedics transported one man to hospital as a precaution said police.
On May 18, at about 1:20 p.m., officers said during marine patrol in the Rice Lake area they also received a report of a sailboat grounded on a sandbar.
Police said they were able to safely tow the vessel free, allowing the operator to continue their journey.
However, the incidents have police reminding boaters to remain vigilant of changing water conditions and shallow areas when navigating local waterways.
And as National Drowning Prevention Week approaches in July, OPP is asking all to be prepared before heading out on the water. This means ensuring you have a fully-charged phone, wearing a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device and having essential safety equipment on board, urged police.
IMPAIRED DRIVING PROBE:
Last Friday (May 22), at about 6:50 p.m., officers said they responded to a traffic complaint about a motorist unable to maintain their lane travelling in the County Road 2 Alnwick/Haldimand area.
Police said they later found a passenger vehicle matching the description parked on the shoulder and after an interaction with the driver, an impaired driving investigation was initiated resulting in an arrest.
As a result of the probe, police said a 50-year-old Brighton resident was charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) and possession of a schedule I substance – opioid.
The accused also had their licence suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle impounded for a week.
None of the charges in the above unrelated incidents have been proven in court.
