Lakelands Public Health is partnering with local animal welfare organizations and veterinary clinics to offer a series of reduced cost rabies vaccination clinics this spring, including a session planned for Campbellford serving Northumberland residents.
The Campbellford clinic (currently the only Northumberland area session announced) will take place Sunday, June 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Paulmac’s Pet Valu located in York Plaza on Doxsee Avenue South.
Rabies vaccinations will cost 40 dollars, with microchips also available for 40 dollars, or both services together for 60 dollars.
Public health officials say the clinics are intended to reduce financial barriers for pet owners while helping ensure pets remain protected against rabies.
Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Environmental Health with Lakelands Public Health, says the clinics can help relieve financial stress for pet owners while protecting both animals and families.
Rabies is a deadly viral disease affecting the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. In Ontario, bats, raccoons, foxes, and skunks are among the animals most commonly associated with rabies transmission.
Under Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Act, cats, dogs, and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies beginning at three months of age and remain up to date throughout their lives.
Lakelands Public Health says the clinics do not include full veterinary examinations and pet owners should continue scheduling regular veterinary appointments for comprehensive care.
Officials also remind pet owners attending the clinics that dogs must be leashed and cats securely transported in carriers.
Additional clinic details are available through Lakelands Public Health’s website.
