Cobourg police say a 22-year-old man has been charged following a break and enter at Victoria Hall early Thursday morning.
Police were called to the municipal building at approximately 6:20 a.m. on June 4 after receiving a report of a break and enter in progress with the suspect reportedly still inside.
According to investigators, officers responded immediately and located the suspect on the premises.
Police allege the individual gained entry to Victoria Hall by smashing a window at the rear of the building.
Following the arrest, officers searched the building to ensure no other individuals were inside. A Scenes of Crime officer also attended to process the scene and gather evidence.
As a result of the investigation the Cobourg resident has been charged with break and enter, theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
The accused was released on an undertaking with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a future date.
Victoria Hall serves as Cobourg’s municipal office and is home to council chambers and administrative departments.
Cobourg Police continue to investigate the incident.
As with all criminal charges, the allegations have not been tested in court.
