Residents looking for relief from another stretch of hot summer weather can take advantage of Quinte West’s cooling centre, which will remain open daily through Sunday, July 12.
The City has activated its cooling centre at the Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens, located at 8 Couch Crescent in Trenton. The facility is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily whenever Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts two consecutive days with temperatures of 31 C or higher, or humidex values reaching 35 or above.
Quinte West is also reminding residents that its splash pads in Trenton and Frankford are open every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., providing another way to stay cool during the heat.
Residents in the Brighton area also have access to cooling options closer to home. The Brighton Public Library offers an air-conditioned space during regular operating hours and has a water station available for visitors seeking relief from the heat.
Families can also cool off at the King Edward Park splash pad, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the summer months, weather permitting.
Health officials recommend drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, wearing light-coloured clothing and checking in on older adults, young children and others who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness.
Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should seek medical attention immediately.
For more information about cooling centres near you check the appropriate municipal website.
