A 22 year old Mississauga man is facing a stunt driving charge after Northumberland OPP say he was caught travelling at 156 kilometres an hour on Highway 401 in Brighton.
Police say an officer conducting traffic enforcement on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 observed the vehicle speeding at about 9:30 p.m. on July 8. After stopping the vehicle, officers charged the driver under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act with performing a stunt through excessive speed.
As part of Ontario’s stunt driving legislation, police suspended the driver’s licence for 30 days and impounded the vehicle for 14 days.
The Northumberland OPP is using the incident to remind motorists that excessive speed remains one of the leading contributors to serious and fatal collisions on Ontario roads.
Under Ontario law, drivers can face stunt driving charges for travelling 50 kilometres an hour or more above the speed limit on roads posted at 80 km/h or higher, 40 kilometres an hour or more over the limit where the posted speed is below 80 km/h, or driving at 150 km/h or more regardless of the posted speed limit.
The charge has not been proven in court. Police continue to encourage drivers to obey posted speed limits and help keep Ontario’s roads safe.
