Road line painting season is underway across Northumberland, with county and municipal crews beginning their annual pavement marking program to improve road safety.
The work includes refreshing lane lines and other pavement markings on nearly 500 kilometres of county roads, along with municipal road networks throughout the county. Officials say the markings help improve visibility and provide better guidance for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Because line painting requires precision and adequate drying time, crews travel at reduced speeds while applying the markings.
Northumberland County Director of Public Works Denise Marshall says fresh pavement markings are an important part of maintaining a safe transportation network and is asking motorists to slow down, keep a safe following distance and respect work zones while crews are on the road.
Drivers are reminded not to pass line painting operations or maintenance vehicles and to avoid driving over freshly painted lines. Officials say wet paint can splash onto vehicles and driving over fresh markings can reduce their reflective properties by damaging the embedded glass beads.
Northumberland County says it appreciates the public’s patience as crews complete the seasonal maintenance program aimed at keeping local roads safe and clearly marked.
