The Municipality of Brighton says it continues to investigate a cybersecurity incident involving its email system after discovering unauthorized access earlier this month.
The incident was identified on July 10, prompting the municipality to activate its cybersecurity response plan and begin efforts to contain the breach. Municipal officials are working with Northumberland County IT Services and an external cybersecurity firm to investigate the incident and secure municipal systems.
The investigation has determined an unauthorized party gained access to the municipality’s email system and used it to send unauthorized emails.
Officials say there is currently no indication that sensitive municipal or personal information has been accessed or compromised, and municipal services continue to operate without disruption. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone directly affected will be contacted.
As a precaution, residents and businesses are being urged to treat unexpected emails appearing to come from the Municipality of Brighton with caution, particularly those containing links or attachments.
The municipality advises people not to click suspicious links, open unexpected attachments or scan QR codes. Residents are also encouraged to verify the sender’s full email address, avoid sharing personal or financial information by email, and confirm unusual requests by contacting the municipality through a trusted phone number or official website.
Anyone who believes they may have clicked a malicious link or shared personal information is encouraged to change their passwords immediately.
Municipal officials say they will continue providing updates as the investigation progresses.
