Brighton, Ontario has officially established a twinning relationship with Brighton, New York.
Mayor Brian Ostrander and Town of Brighton, New York Supervisor Bill Moehle signed the Twinning Charter Friday during a ceremony attended by members of Brighton Council and members of the public.
The charter formally establishes the relationship between the two municipalities. Brighton Council previously approved the agreement at its June 1 meeting.
Ostrander says the partnership will honour the shared history between the two communities while creating opportunities for cultural, civic and community exchange.
“Building strong international friendships at the local level is essential,” Ostrander said.
He says the relationship can help foster connections between residents and communities on both sides of the border.
Ostrander also acknowledged the broader cross-border tensions currently affecting Canada and the United States, saying local leaders have a responsibility to promote kindness, goodwill and mutual respect.
The mayor welcomed Supervisor Moehle to Brighton for the signing and said the municipality is looking forward to building a strong and connected future together.
The signing marks the formal beginning of the twinning relationship between the two Brightons, with future cultural, civic and community opportunities expected to build on the partnership.
