The Brighton Vikings have announced their new mascot has been named Alfie, following a fan vote held late last month.
The name was inspired in part by the late Brighton resident Alfie Gregg, who played a major role in supporting young hockey players in the community. Vikings owner Tony Iezzi says the fan vote made it clear that Alfie was an important part of many children’s hockey experiences.
The team says the name is also meant to recognize the thousands of volunteers whose efforts help make minor hockey possible.
As part of the Name the Mascot Contest, Sarah McDonald won a pair of passes for the Vikings’ inaugural season. The team says McDonald was among the area youth hockey players who benefited from Gregg’s support at the rink.
Alfie will make his debut during the Vikings’ home-opening weekend at King Edward Park Arena.
The Vikings will host the Orangeville Blitz at 7:30 p.m. on both Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26.
Season tickets are now available, while single-game tickets will be sold at the door.
