Northumberland County is marking Hunger Action Month by encouraging residents to take simple steps throughout September to help address food insecurity and support organizations providing food assistance locally.
The annual national campaign focuses attention on the causes and impacts of hunger while promoting efforts aimed at reducing poverty and ensuring more Canadians have access to nutritious food.
Locally, Food 4 All Warehouse works with 12 community food banks and supports student nutrition programs across Northumberland. The organization is part of a broader network that includes Food Banks Canada and Feed Ontario.
Food 4 All helped support more than 41 student nutrition programs, providing an average of 98,000 meals and snacks each month to over 5,600 students during the school year.
The county is encouraging residents to learn more about local food insecurity by reviewing its Feed Change Report and taking part in the 30 Ways in 30 Days challenge, which suggests daily actions to support food security.
Residents can also access information about food programs through FoodHelpNorthumberland.cioc.ca or donate needed items to local food banks.
