Alnwick/Haldimand town crier Liam Cragg has returned from the World Crier Tournament in Chester, England with some new hardware for the trophy shelf. Cragg says criers came from all over to compete.
There were three categories he competed in: the Hometown Cry about your home community, the Retail Cry where criers were given an assigned retail outlet to advertise and the Hotel Cry to sing the praises of the accommodations you stayed at while there.
Cragg took 3rd place in the Hotel Cry.
Cragg says this competition is different from those he’s participated in in Canada where they want the crier to engage the audience and make them laugh instead of just judging on delivery.
Though he’s not sure the panto experience of crying will come to North America he had a great time in England.
