Fire Prevention Week in Ontario runs Oct. 4 to 10 this year, giving families a good reminder to think about fire safety at home.
Adam Walsh is a captain with the Brighton Fire and Rescue Team, and he says education is a very important aspect of what they do on an ongoing basis to ensure students understand, from an early age, the importance of fire prevention.
The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal encourages residents to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, practise a home escape plan and know two ways out of every room. It’s also a good time to check that everyone in the household knows where to meet outside after escaping.
Walsh emphasizes that smoke alarms in all dwellings are crucial in warning residents of possible dangers well before it might be too late to get to safety.
Fire officials remind people to stay calm, get out quickly and never go back inside a burning home. A few minutes of preparation can make a big difference in an emergency. Fire Prevention Week runs right through Saturday, Oct. 10.
