The County of Northumberland is partnering with local farmers and police to promote road safety during the fall harvest season.
The “Slow Down, Stay Alert and Wait to Pass” campaign reminds motorists to use caution when approaching farm machinery displaying the orange-and-red slow-moving-vehicle triangle.
Tractors, combines and wagons often travel between fields and farm properties during harvest. Their size and limited manoeuvrability can make turning difficult, and drivers may need to move closer to the shoulder.
The initiative was first proposed by Cramahe Township’s Agricultural Advisory Committee amid concerns about unsafe passing and motorists following farm equipment too closely.
The campaign will feature portable roadside signs in rural areas and at key entry points into Northumberland, along with public awareness messaging coordinated across local municipalities.
Motorists are being urged to slow down, leave plenty of space, watch for unexpected turns and pass only when it is safe and legal.
