Norfolk County’s fall urban yard waste collection begins this week, with curbside pickup available across all three collection zones through the week of November 23.
The program is expanding this fall, bringing curbside yard waste collection to nine additional hamlets.
Collection takes place weekly for the six-week period on residents’ regular waste collection day. Residents can confirm their collection schedule using Norfolk County’s online address lookup tool or the Recycle Coach app.
The expanded service includes Walsingham in Zone 2, along with Booth’s Harbour at the top of the hill, Fernlea, Gilbertville, Lynedoch, Normandale, Pinegrove, Port Ryerse and Wilsonville in Zone 3.
Zone 1 includes Long Point and Simcoe, while Zone 2 also serves Port Dover, Langton and Port Rowan. Zone 3 includes Turkey Point, Vittoria, St. Williams, Courtland, Delhi and Waterford, along with the newly added communities.
Residents must place yard waste in brown paper leaf bags with the tops rolled shut.
There is no limit on the number of bags, but each must weigh no more than 18 kilograms, or 40 pounds, and plastic bags will not be collected.
Leaves and other yard waste should not be placed in green organics carts.
Small trimmings less than 2.5 centimetres in diameter can be tied or bundled in lengths under 91 centimetres, or three feet, but plastic twine and metal ties are not permitted.
Garbage, burnt leaves, flowerpots and animal waste should not be included with yard waste.
Norfolk County also reminds residents to keep leaves and grass clippings off streets and neighbouring properties, as they can block catch basins, create slippery conditions and interfere with street sweeping.
Rural properties are not eligible for curbside yard waste collection.
However, yard waste can be taken to Norfolk County transfer stations free of charge in paper bags or in bulk for composting, while regular tipping fees apply to loads of brush and branches.
Residents can also mulch leaves for lawns, gardens and flowerbeds or compost them at home.
