For nearly three decades, Simcoe resident Lester Besenyodi has been rolling up his sleeve to help others, and recently, that dedication helped him reach an impressive milestone.
Besenyodi has officially surpassed 100 blood donations through Canadian Blood Services, with his total now sitting at 104.
What started as a simple decision to attend a local blood donor clinic has turned into a lifelong commitment to helping others.
When he reached 50 donations, he realized hitting 100 was within reach and set himself a new goal.
Over the years, donating blood has become a regular part of his life.
Besenyodi says the actual donation usually takes just eight to ten minutes, and he’s fortunate that he hasn’t experienced any side effects afterward.
For him, knowing his donations are helping others makes the experience worthwhile.
Canadian Blood Services recognized his 100th donation with a special certificate and a new donor card marking the achievement.
But Besenyodi is also quick to recognize someone who helped motivate him along the way.
His former coworker and fellow retiree, Burt Hurst of Delhi, has donated blood 149 times. Besenyodi says Hurst’s dedication encouraged him to keep giving.
Now, he’s hoping his story inspires someone else in Norfolk County to donate for the first time.
After more than 100 donations, Besenyodi has shown how one small act of kindness, repeated over many years, can make a lasting difference.
And with 104 donations behind him, there’s no indication he’s ready to stop rolling up his sleeve anytime soon.
