A collision between a CN freight train and a tractor-trailer near Brighton caused significant damage and disrupted rail traffic Friday morning.
The incident happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. November 6 at the railway crossing on Stoney Point Road, near Lawson Settlement Road.
The tractor-trailer, which was hauling a low flatbed trailer, became stuck while attempting to cross the tracks. The driver managed to escape the vehicle and attempted to alert railway officials using an emergency telephone at the crossing.
However, an eastbound CN freight train struck the truck before it could be stopped.
The Transportation Safety Board confirmed there was no derailment or fuel leak, and no injuries were reported.
The collision caused extensive damage to the train and commercial vehicle, while Stoney Point Road was closed in both directions.
The incident also disrupted passenger rail service, leaving VIA Rail passengers stranded at the Cobourg station for several hours before trains were allowed to continue.
